Bib draw at Kuerc square.

5000 people embrace the jet men

The end of the afternoon in Bormio was full of emotions, with the parade in the town centre and the bib draw ceremony at Piazza Kuerc, in the tourist resort of Alta Valtellina. Many, many people followed the parade, which began at around 6pm at Piazza S. Vitale, and then continued along Via Roma, up to Piazza Kuerc. And it was precisely this famous square, the beating heart of Bormio packed with people and fans, that welcomed the jet men at 6.30pm. When on stage, they collected their DH bibs to be used tomorrow, Thursday 28 at 11.30am for the classic DH race at Stelvio, one of the most difficult, fascinating and iconic races of the entire white circus, waited for by all downhillers. Last year, the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr was the DH fastest one (1’54"68); he managed to do better than the Canadian James Crawford, second place, and the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, third place, Odermatt, fourth place, Ryan Cochran-Siegle, fifth place. Little glory for the Italians, with a discreet ninth place for Mattia Casse, and a disappointing tenth place for Dominik Paris, considering his CV about Stelvio (6 DH victories and one Super-G victory).

What a massive crowd in the square this afternoon, over 5000 people cheering and applauding their favorite ones. The king of Stelvio Dominik Paris and the other Italian downhillers were praised (and at the end of the ceremony they stopped to sign postcards and autographs) but Odermatt, Kilde and Kriechmayr also received their huge share of cheers.

Tomorrow morning the first to start will be German Andreas Sander. Florian Schider will be the first Italian on course with bib 8, Mattia Casse bib 10, Dominik Paris bib 12, Christof Innerhofer bib 21, Guglielmo Bosca bib 41, Pietro Zazzi bib 44, Nicolò Molteni bib 48 and Giovanni Franzoni bib 55.
Among the big names worth mentioning: Marco Odermatt bib 6, Vincent Kriechmayr bib 9 and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde bib 15.
