A sparkling square the night before the DH race

The moment of truth has come here in Bormio.

Date:27.12.2022

The two DH training days are over, the last details have been finalised, and the classic World Cup DH race will take place tomorrow at Stelvio. The one in Bormio is one of the most difficult races of the entire circuit (the most difficult one, according to many athletes) and one of the most waited for by jet-men. A victory here in Bormio can be compared to a sort of "degree in speed" and you only need to take a look at the hall of fame to realise that only true champions dominated here in Alta Valtellina.
There’s no room for outsiders on a slope where total attention from top to bottom is needed. It takes athletes to the limit. Kilde was absolutely in great shape and Mattia Casse too did very well, with today’s second place. Other athletes deserving special attention are Swiss Odermatt, Austrian Meyer, Canadian Crawford and American Cochran-Siegle. And of course Dominik Paris - the 7 times king of Stelvio (6 DH and 1 Super-G victories.)

In the late afternoon - after a forced stop due to the Covid 19 emergency - the central Kuerc square in Bormio became the venue of the usual bib draw ceremony, a much appreciated event both by Bormio citizens and the many tourists who are visiting the “Magnifica Terra”. The crowd was huge and cheered for the athletes, who were there starting at 6.30pm. The Azzurri - led by Paris and Innerhofer - did a meet & greet with fans. Furthermore, the mayor of Bormio Silvia Cavazzi officially awarded Dominik Paris with the honorary citizenship (now he is a true Bormio citizen) and appointed Pietro Zazzi - who was born and raised in Bormio and will be there tomorrow at Stelvio - Bormio Ambassador.

The DH race is scheduled to start at 11.30am. The event will be preceded by a parade at Stelvio at 10.20am. The little members of Sci Club Bormio will celebrate the past DH athletes and the 100th anniversary of the club. At 3 pm, the kids of the local ski clubs will take part in the Speed Contest by Vitalini, a speed race at the final part of Stelvio.
